Puppy Adoption

Once we are sure which puppy we want and what is the ideal dog for us, we can go out and buy one. This is where some questions come in so here we have attempted to answer your questions.

Where should you acquire a puppy?
The best place to get a pure race puppy is with an official breeder. You can find breeders by consulting with other owners, veterinarians, newspaper ads, internet, magazines, or by visiting dog shows. Do not buy your puppy from a seller who gets his dogs from more than one source. These puppies may have been weaned too quickly or they may have taken long trips in a state of panic or confusion before arriving at his final destination. The risk of problems and disease brought on by stress is greater with these puppies.  Puppy Adoption

Animal shelters are another excellent source for puppies, despite the fact that at times it can be harder to find pups there since most dogs in shelters tend to be older. It is preferible to regularly visit your neighborhood shelter since puppies do not often stay for long.

What characteristics should you seek in a puppy?
You should ask to see the puppy with its mother. This way you will be able to check the quality of the mother’s care towards her pups, which will give you an idea of the size and personality of the puppy when it reaches adult age. Also ask to see the father. Sometimes this is possible. It is better to wait for the puppy to reach around 8 weeks before separating him from the mother. Only ever get puppies in seemingly clean establishments where the dogs are happy and in good health. Choose an active puppy with a clean and healthy appearance. His eyes and nose should not be runny. The puppy’s ears should be clean and his gums should have a healthy pink color.

Check for signs of diarrhea under the tail and behind the legs. The puppy’s fur may seem a bit dull but overall the animal should be clean and free of any irritation. Look out for any misinformation and check out the abdomen for any abnormal swelling such as an umbilical hernia. If there is any doubt as to the puppy’s health, ask to get him checked by a veterinarian. Do not buy a weak puppy just out of pity. You may have to deal with long-term problems like never-ending veterinarian bills.

What should you expect?
Do not get offended if the breeder asks you questions regarding your own situation, for example regarding your plans for the puppy. This shows real concern about the puppy’s wellbeing and can help you to avoid making mistakes when choosing the puppy in case you missed some information in the questions you needed to make up before buying the pup. You should receive a signed statement of the puppy’s pedigree (when necessary), as well as registration form and the transfer of ownership. The latter may be issued later when there is a registration period. Make sure that the puppy is current on all vaccinations and treatments and find out how you can administer any missing treatments or shots.

Be sure to obtain any relevant certificates. The breeder should write down the puppy’s diet, pointing out the type of food, quantity and frequency of meals. It is preferable to follow this diet for a few days before gradually introducing the puppy to your chosen food. You can also ask the breeder for some useful tips regarding the specific needs of your puppy’s breed.Within a few days of taking your pet home, you should have your veterinarian examine him and give you advice regarding vaccination, food, treatments, and general care.
