Rottweiler
Historical Summary of the Breed
The name of this breed comes from the German city in which it was discovered. It is thought that the Rottweiler descended from the Bavarian Bouvier, though there are also versions that say it comes from ancient Mastiffs or Molossers, introduced into Germany through Roman invasions. Its capacity for learning and its fierce and protective character converted it rapidly into an excellent herd dog, even taking over major flocks.
Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the Rottweiler came out of Germany and spread over Europe and North America. That way, little by little, it has been gaining a wider acknowledgement, even being employed in some countries as a helper to police and armed forces.
General Appearance
The Rottweiler is a robust and strong dog, ranging medium to large in size. It is not a heavy dog, nor is it light. It has blended proportions, although its rotund aspect foretells its force, flexibility and resistance.
Its head is wide with a slightly arched forehead. Its eyes, small and almond-shaped, are tremendously expressive. The eyes transmit loyalty and courage. It has a muscular set of teeth and a characteristic "jaw-locking" bite. Its coat is thick and it has a strong, muscular tail, just like the rest of its body.
Temperament and Behavior
It has a friendly and passive humor and it adores children. It is a dedicated, obedient, and docile dog that loves to work. Its appearance can be deceiving. It is a dog that is very sure of itself and, well educated, has perfectly balanced nerves. It is difficult to affect, therefore it is slow to anger. It is very attentive to all its surroundings. That said, it should not be forgotten that this is an extremely strong guard dog.
